While it used to be true that you could only use K-Cups with their products, it's now possible to buy an optional filter basket so you can enjoy any grinds you wish.

You can even open non-supported pods and empty the grinds into the brew basket if you want to avoid the hassle of measuring and grinding your beans. Top 5 Single Serve Coffee Makers 2017

#1 Keurig: K575 Progammable Single Serve Cofee Maker

Keurig K575 Single Serve Programmable K-Cup Coffee Maker

Without a doubt, the K575 represents the ultimate achievement in single brew coffee makers. This is the best single serve coffee maker available, so you can quit reading now and purchase it with confidence if you just want the very best. It offers all the features you would expect to find in a top-notch coffee maker. Enjoy freshly brewed coffee each morning with this exceptional unit.

Few coffee makers make it possible for you to control the strength and the temperature of the water that comes through the machine. Many machines make it possible to control the strength, but temperature control is often a missing feature. Temperature control is essential to getting the right extraction from your beans to achieve a rich, full and non-bitter flavor in your coffee. The K575 gives you five temperature settings.

An automatic coffee maker should offer customizable settings to ensure you can adjust the programming time. The coffee maker should also have an automatic shut-off feature to protect the unit from excessive heat. With the K575, all of these features are available, but you must program them to ensure they work properly. Add the ability to set your coffee to brew at a set time and you have a dynamic machine with excellent options. The K575 offers impressive features, including a high altitude setting, energy saver mode, favorite settings and a nightlight.

Single serve coffee is great, but sometimes you want to brew for a gathering of people in your home. For these times, it's nice to have the option to brew an entire pot. The problem with most coffee machines equipped with single serve and full pot offerings is that a separate brewing mechanism is often used for each option. With the K575, a single brewing mechanism is used. This makes the machine more efficient and allows the manufacturer to use premium components that adjust depending on the size of the brew.

While you can brew an entire pot of coffee, you will need to purchase the optional carafe for use in the machine. However, since the machine is equipped with an 80-ounce water reservoir, you'll be able to brew an entire carafe of coffee without the need for a separate machine. Another nice feature of this machine is the ability to use the Keurig 2.0 My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter to brew specialty coffee.

You can even get a custom brew. Set a 12-ounce or larger cup under the brew head and then select the 6-ounce option. Choose a different coffee and brew your next 6 ounces. This gives you a nice flavor mix you can savor.

  • Includes largest water reservoir in our line-up, which means you won't have to constantly refill your water tank.
  • Clean water is mere moments away with the water filter enclosed in the handle.
  • Enjoy hot water on demand and select your brew size to enjoy teas, hot chocolate and other hot beverages.
  • Connect with a color touch screen to program your brewing options.
  • Supports a wide variety of K-Cup sizes, including the 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 22, 26, and 30 ounce sizes.
  • The carafe needed to brew the 22, 26, and 30-ounce sizes must be purchased seperately.
  • Doesn't work with cups that aren't branded with the "Compatible with Keurig 2.0" notice, but you can purchase the optional coffee filter for brewing your own coffee.
  • May offer too many settings and options for the minimalist.

#2 Keurig: K55 Programmable Single Serve Coffee Maker

Keurig K55 Single Serve Programmable K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker

Our second recommendation offers a good compromise for those who want the quality coffee and settings that the K575 offers, but who don't need the ability to brew a carafe of coffee. You'll get the same quality components, but there are a few elements you will be sacrificing. If you can live without the extra features of the K575, then you can confidently buy the K55 without regrets.

For starters, you'll refill the tank more often with the K55. The tank size on this machine is only 48 ounces, which is plenty for about 3 to 4 12-ounce cups of coffee per day. However, you may find yourself wishing you went with the larger tank if there are many people in your household. One thing to remember is that some of the water gets absorbed into the beans, so a 48-ounce reservoir won't give you four 12-ounce servings on a single fill.

This machine also doesn't offer a color touch screen. You're limited to the buttons available on the side of the machine. This means you'll be able to easily descale, turn on the auto-off setting and turn the unit on and off. You can also choose the size and strength of your brew using one of the conveniently noted buttons that are available on the main control panel.

The system doesn't take very long to heat up, and you'll be able to see when the unit is ready to brew with the convenient indicator light. Choose your brew size from 6, 8, or 10 ounces, and enjoy the ability to make some quick hot water when you want to enjoy some tea. As with the K575, you'll be able to brew the perfect cup of coffee with your own grinds if you decide to purchase the optional K-Cup reusable filter. You can enjoy an outstanding cup of coffee with this machine, but it may require more fiddling with the settings to get the same brew as the K575.

Convenience features are very similar to the K575. The K55 comes with a removable drip tray so that you can catch any overflows or dripping from the nozzle once your coffee has finished brewing. The parts are all easily removed for a thorough cleaning as well. You'll save some money with this machine, but you must give up the 2.8-inch XL color touch screen, a high-altitude setting, nightlight and many other advanced features.

  • Contains the third-largest tank in our review of Keurig single serve coffee makers.
  • Uses pods that virtually eliminate the mess of ground coffee and beans.
  • An auto-off feature helps save energy when the machine is not in use.
  • Simple cleaning using the descaling feature.
  • Includes a water filter in the handle for fresh, clean water.
  • Doesn't offer the ability to brew carafe sizes.
  • Many accessories you might want aren't included, including the K-Cup Reusable Coffee filter.
  • Offers a descaling feature, but additional descaling tabs are needed.

#3 Keurig: K475 Programmable Single Serve Coffee Maker

Keurig K475 Single Serve Programmable K- Cup Pod Coffee Maker

For an exceptional value-priced product, the K475 offers a suitable option if you want something more than the K55 but aren't convinced the K575 is what you need. This unit also offers an optional carafe, and it can be seen as the little brother of the K575. When it comes to the quality of the coffee produced, you should get a very comparable serving of coffee when compared with the K575.

When compared to the K575, it is missing the hot water on-demand option. It's a bit smaller than the K575, but it still comes with a 2.4-inch touch screen. Compared to the K575, you'll get most all of the same basic features. Additionally, the water reservoir only holds 70 ounces while the K575 holds 80. This unit also doesn't include a nightlight for that nice ambient glow. If you can live without those features, then this unit should provide an optimal choice for you.

Similar to the K575, this unit does offer the option to brew your own grinds. The K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter does not come included with this unit, and you will have to purchase that filter separately. Additionally, you can use any of the Keurig accessories that are available for the K575. This is really just an older model of the K575, so it should make a suitable option for those who don't need the latest and the greatest.

When it comes to temperature control, you can select from five possible temperature settings. You can also use the strength setting to brew a bolder cup of coffee, so the quality between this machine and the K575 are almost the same. For carafe sizes, you can choose from 22, 26 or 30 ounces. Just make sure you have enough water in the reservoir to accommodate the setting you choose.

This system is designed to make brewing coffee easier. It automatically tells you when it's heated to the proper temperature, and it makes it very difficult to make a mistake in the brewing process. As with the K575, you'll know when you've already used a pod since the machine will alert you. Additionally, if you open the top, you'll see easily that the old pod is spent.

Things We Liked

Things We Didn't Like

  • Contains the second-largest tank in our reviews of Keurig single serve coffee makers.
  • Includes a strength control setting to adjust the coffee to your level of taste.
  • Uses a color touch screen to make programming your settings a breeze.
  • There is an option to dispense hot water only.
  • The removable drip tray is moveable and effective at catching drips and overfills.
  • You'll need to buy the Keurig 2.0 My K-Cup Coffee filter if you want to brew your own coffee.
  • The carafe needed to brew entire pots doesn't come with the machine.

#4 Hamilton Beach: 49980A Programmable Single Serve and Full Pot Coffee Maker

Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Full Pot Coffee Maker

This unit offers the option to brew both a single or full cup of coffee. The single-cup portion is situated on the side of the unit, which makes it possible to get a custom brew on both sides. You'll also be able to use ground coffee grounds, and it includes the filter needed to brew your coffee. Unlike the Keurig machine, this offering doesn't offer a touchscreen. However, it does make it possible to brew with more control over your final batch.

The control panel and display make it possible to program your brew up to 24 hours in advance. This is an option that isn't typically available with the Keurig models. With this machine, you get a wide variety of features and special settings. It's not necessary to buy any optional components to brew a full pot of coffee. However, you also don't get the same level of convenience as the Keurig.

One nice thing about the Keurig is that the entire water reservoir is clearly visible on the side of the machine. With this machine, you'll need to lift the lid to check the water level. However, this shouldn't pose too much of an inconvenience. When it comes to the overall quality of coffee that is produced, this machine is comparable to the Keurig K55. If there was an option to control the temperature, then this unit would compare well to the Keurig K475 or K575 models. However, if you use standard medium-roast coffee, you should get an excellent brew.

The unit does come with a control panel and a display. This lets you view the current time and gives you some access to programming features. There is also an option to hold both soft and SenseoPods. This unit won't work with K-Cups, so if you want to use K-Cups you'll have to choose the 49983A model from Hamilton Beach. Overall, this is a major upgrade over many coffee makers that are out there. However, when it comes time to do battle with the Keurig, it's not as effective.

  • Comes with built-in support for brewing a single cup or a full 12-cup carafe of coffee.
  • The single-serve coffee maker on the side uses its own reservoir.
  • It's possible to use most brands of pods.
  • The machine automatically shuts off after two hours.
  • Offers a sleek and streamlined look to complement your kitchen.
  • The unit is not compatible with K-Cups, but it can use SenseoPods.
  • There is a 14-ounce travel mug that works with the machine, but it is not included.
  • Only two brew strengths to choose from and no option to control the temperature.

#5 Hamilton Beach: 49983A Programmable Single Serve and Full Pot Coffee Maker

Hamilton Beach FlexBrew 49983A Single Serve / Full Pot Coffee Maker

The main reason to choose this coffee maker is if you like the decision of the Hamilton Beach option, but you don't want to use SenseoPods. This unit does accept K-Cups, and you'll also be able to brew your own ground coffee as well. It holds up to 12 cups, which is comparable to the other Hamilton Beach model we reviewed. When it comes to pouring your coffee, you'll get a drip-free pouring experience and you can save yourself some hassle with the auto shut-off and auto-pause feature.

Like the 49980A model, this unit does come with a 1-year warranty. If anything goes wrong during that time, you'll be able to get service or replacement from the company. The single serve side brews up to 14 ounces of coffee. There is even a convenient 14-ounce travel mug that is designed for the machine. The mug must be purchased optionally, but it's a nice way to use your machine and easily transport your coffee to work.

One nice feature is the adjustable cup rest. The unit has a block that comes out to bring your cup closer to the nozzle. This prevents dripping and splatter when using a smaller cup to brew your coffee. You'll love the way this unit gives you options, and you can set it to automatically shut-off after two hours. The unit is designed with convenience and simplicity in mind. However, you'll also get the option to brew with your preferred strength. Choose from either a bold or normal brew strength to get the right level of flavor in your coffee.

This coffee machine is perfect for a small apartment. It doesn't take up too much space, and it still looks classy sitting on your counter. You'll love the ability to choose your options, and it will give you more brewing options than most other coffee makers on the market. With the option to brew a single cup or get a large carafe growing for a group of friends, this unit offers good versatility and will be a welcome addition to any home.

Like the 49980A, this unit doesn't offer temperature control. You also shouldn't simply add hot water to the unit to make your extraction a bit hotter. This could ruin the internal components, and this unit is intended to keep only cool or cold water in the reservoir. Still, this coffee maker offers an ideal option if you want to save some money while still enjoying advanced brewing features.

  • Offers the option to brew a carafe or a single cup.
  • Comes with an auto-pause feature that stops the brewing process when you remove the carafe and resumes when you return it to its position.
  • The single-serve side is compatible with both ground coffee and Keurig K-Cups.
  • Use the timer to set your exact brewing time and have coffee ready when you need it.
  • Offers a more compact design than many of the other models.
  • Many internal plastic parts makes this unit feel less solid than other options.
  • Requires a thorough cleaning process before the first use to get rid of the "factory" taste.
  • Works well if you understand how the coffee maker works, but it's not an intuitive design.

The best single serve coffee maker is the one that makes your life easier and provides you with a hassle-free cup of coffee. A machine with tons of features won't help you get up in the morning, and it's of no use if it doesn't make it easy to make your coffee. Ditching the coffee shop habit can be made easier when you have the best single serve coffee makers available for sale.

If you've read through our single serve coffee maker reviews, then it's time to get the best single cup coffee maker for your money and take your coffee experience to the next level.
